Duration: 12 months+
Rate: $60-80/hr on Vendor W2

The team is geographically distributed, with only a small number of members located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Ideal Candidate
This is not a traditional technical writing position focused on requirements documents or user manuals.
The ideal candidate possesses enough software engineering or DevOps knowledge to understand CI/CD processes independently while excelling at simplifying technical workflows into practical, easy-to-follow documentation. They should be able to review existing engineering documentation, understand how internal deployment tools function, and produce comprehensive implementation guides with minimal oversight.
Team Environment
• Join a collaborative platform engineering organization responsible for enterprise deployment capabilities.
• Work with a team of approximately 14 engineers supporting build and deployment platforms used by 10,000 engineers across the organization.
• Report to the manager leading the enterprise pipeline organization.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Technical Writer / CI/CD Documentation Consultant to join a team responsible for the bank’s enterprise application and infrastructure deployment platforms. These platforms support approximately 10,000 engineers building and deploying applications across cloud, on-premises, containerized, and mainframe environments.
This role will focus on transforming highly technical engineering documentation into clear, practical, and user-friendly guides that enable engineers of varying experience levels to successfully build and deploy applications using the organization’s CI/CD platform.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical writing skills with a solid understanding of software engineering and DevOps concepts, allowing them to independently interpret technical documentation and create comprehensive, easy-to-follow instructional content.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop clear, step-by-step documentation for application build and deployment workflows.
• Create end-to-end guides for common CI/CD scenarios, including build, deployment, and infrastructure provisioning processes.
• Translate complex engineering concepts into easy-to-understand documentation for engineers who are not CI/CD experts.
• Review existing technical documentation for internally developed CI/CD plugins and expand it into user-friendly tutorials.
• Produce documentation that includes:
o Process flows
o Step-by-step implementation instructions
o Screenshots and visual walkthroughs
o YAML configuration examples
o Required variables and configuration inputs
o Infrastructure provisioning guidance
o Deployment best practices
• Partner closely with software engineers and platform teams to validate documentation accuracy.
• Continuously improve documentation quality and usability based on engineering feedback.
Required Qualifications
• Experience as a Technical Writer supporting software engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, or infrastructure teams.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD concepts and software delivery pipelines.
• Experience documenting application build and deployment workflows.
• Working knowledge of GitLab CI/CD or similar pipeline technologies.
• Ability to read and understand YAML configuration files.
• Experience translating highly technical concepts into clear, actionable documentation.
• Skilled in creating process documentation, tutorials, walkthroughs, screenshots, and workflow diagrams.
• Comfortable collaborating with engineers while independently developing documentation.
